Back when hard drives could store only 20 megabytes, my father asked Seagate for information on a chip that blew out, and they lied and said that it was proprietary. It was actually a generic Motorola or SGS (now STmicro) motor H-driver chip available locally for a ridiculously high $4. Around the same time, my father also dealt with another HD maker, one eventually bought out by Maxtor, and they readily told him the generic part number for the common audio amplifier chip they used for driving the spindle motor or moving the heads.

I’ve replaced only a few of those pins. If the pin went into a hole on the circuit board, I’d cut the pin, but if it simply attached to the surface, I’d use desoldering braid and a dental pick to lift the contact, then I’d pull the remnants of the pin by heating it so the plastic holding it in place melted. Then I’d replace it with a square wire wrap pin.

Thanx for nothing to the seagate’s customer service. They were asking me for 1000$ to fix the hard drive and recover the data.

Close call…I’ve gotten in the habit of burning my RAWs to a CD as soon as I’ve got enough to fill a disc.
